NEW DELHI: A woman was allegedly cheated out of over Rs 6.6 lakh by scammers on the pretext of investment. The complainant is a resident of New Delhi’s Sunheri Bagh Lane.
According to her complaint, she initially came into contact with the fraudsters via an app, where she was approached with an offer to review a task. After completing the task, she was promised a small monetary return.
Shortly thereafter, she was invited to join a social media group, where she was introduced to individuals who posed as investment professionals. The fraudsters convinced the woman that they could manage her investments, promising significant returns.
The complainant said that, as part of this scheme, they showed her minor profits from supposed trading transactions, which led her to trust them with larger sums of money.
Over time, she transferred a total of Rs 6,60,005 to various bank accounts linked to the fraudsters. The payments were made using UPI and other electronic transfer methods through her mother’s bank account. The alleged fraudsters used multiple social media handles, as well as a mobile number, to communicate with the complainant.
“However, after she requested a withdrawal of her funds, they informed her that the money could not be returned unless certain tasks were completed, which she claims were unclear and unreasonable,” police said. The fraudsters allegedly escalated the situation by threatening her with further financial loss and harassment when she demanded transparency or a return of her investment.
Following her complaint, the cybercrime police station of New Delhi district registered the case under Section 318(4) (cheating) of the BNS.
