Delhi Municipal Corporation Collects Rs 4.2 Lakh in Fines for GRAP Rule Violations |

MCD mops up 4.2L in fines for violation of GRAP rules

New Delhi: Acting against those not adhering to GRAP norms, Municipal Corporation of Delhi imposed 290 penalties in Oct. The penalties amounted to Rs 65 lakh and the civic body has collected Rs 4.2 lakh so far.
While the inspection teams found no instances of open burning during their checks, they continue to monitor sites for illegal waste dumping. Nearly 150 teams and 550 personnel have been deployed to check illegal dumping and construction sites in two shifts. Separate teams are deployed to check burning of biomass, said officials.
“To raise general complaints related to garbage, construction and demolition waste, air pollution, and other general issues, we are motivating people to lodge complaints through the mobile app (MCD 311),” stated the civic body in a status report submitted in NGT recently.
A total of 7,32,972 complaints were received between May 1, 2017 and Oct 31, 2024 on the app, out of which 6,22,553 (85%) complaints were resolved. “This 311 App is being regularly monitored and reviewed at various levels,” said officials.
On average, about 26,000 complaints are received monthly and they are resolved in a time-bound manner, they claimed.
The horticulture department has also taken up the greening of open areas, parks, municipal institutions, roads, ground covers, etc. It planted 3,63,587 (1,60,436 trees and 2,03,151 shrubs) in its jurisdiction till Sept against a target of 6,19,000 for the financial year 2024-25.
“Only the roads having a right of way less than 60ft are maintained by MCD. There is no central verge on these roads,” stated the civic body.
During the period from April to Oct, roads with a length of 90 km were resurfaced or repaired. “We repaired 11,398 potholes covering an area of 34,853 sqm during April to Oct. Moreover, it is a routine process to check new potholes and repair the same on priority,” said an MCD official.
The civic body has designated 106 sites for dumping C&D waste or debris in various wards. Out of these, 55 dumping sites are being improved by way of barricading or water sprinklers. The transportation of C&D waste is done in covered vehicles.
