‘His legacy will live on’: His legacy will live on’: Prayer meet celebrates Rohit Bal’s life
The evening began with a musical tribute to Gudda, featuring his favourite songs

Tears, memories and anecdotes were shared as some old photos from Rohil Bal’s archives flashed on a huge screen. The life of an iconic designer, who passed away Friday evening after suffering a long illness, was celebrated as his friends and family gathered on Monday for his prayer meet. Watching old photos of Gudda with his friends, family and of his best moments on the runway was the most emotional part for many in the gathering.

The evenings began with the musical tribute for Gudda and all his favourite songs were included. “Rohit Bal’s parents owned cinema theatres in Srinagar and he loved old movies and old songs. He would sing them often in the company of his friends,” shared a singer on stage as she sang songs like Lag Ja Gale, Ye Jeevan Hai, Aapki Nazron Ne Samjha and Seene Mein Sulagte Hain Armaan – “the song that was very close to his heart and would sing this often when he would miss his parents.”

‘Gudda’s legacy will live on’
Rohit Bal’s niece Reshma shared, “My sisters and I were responsible for making half of Delhi call him Gudda Mama and he would come up to me and say ‘who are all these people calling me Gudds Ma and Gudda Mama?’ and I would tell him that ‘it’s fine, they all love you.’ It’s very tough to think of the world without Gudda, so I prefer to think that he is always going to be with us and through his legacy he will continue to be with the next generation, not just of his own family, but of every person’s family whose life he touched. When it comes to legacy people have this idea that legacy is something that you pass on to your children, but that is inheritance, legacy is when you have hundreds and thousands of custodians, which he did have. Those custodians are people who worked for him, whether it was on the cutting floor, designers or the person sewing buttons in his factory, his wonderful friends, who are here or not here today. Each and every one of you is a custodian of his legacy and I just want to assure you that though we will never be able to touch the pinnacle that he was on, we will strive for it together. He left us on Diwali, the darkest night, but he lit up the skies with his brilliance.”
