NEW DELHI: A DTC bus spun out of control and mowed down a 27-year-old patrol cop and another man near Monastery Market in North Delhi on Monday night.
Multiple PCR calls reporting the accident were received starting at 10.38 pm at the Civil Lines Police Station. The accident occurred between 10.15 pm and 10.30 pm when the broken-down bus mounted the pavement and wreaked havoc on Ring Road, a senior police officer said.
Constable Victor, 27, a patrol officer from Civil Lines Police Station who began his night patrol duty just 30 minutes earlier, was one of the victims. The Nagaland native, who served at the station since June 2023, was performing his duties on a PCR bike when the incident occurred.
According to police reports, the green DTC bus, operating on Route 261 between Sarai Kale Khan ISBT and Nand Nagari, first mounted the pavement and struck a billboard pole, uprooting it from its base. The out-of-control vehicle then hit Constable Victor and another unidentified civilian before crossing the road, hitting the divider, and coming to rest atop it.
Both victims were rushed to Parmanand Hospital, Civil Lines, where they were pronounced dead on arrival. Constable Victor sustained severe injuries to his face, head, and neck.
The bus driver, identified as 57-year-old Vinod Kumar, a DTC employee since 2010, has been taken into police custody. Kumar, a resident of Ghazipur, emerged from the accident uninjured. At the time of the incident, the bus was reportedly in a breakdown state and carried no passengers except for one DTC Duty Officer.
Police officials have confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated, and an investigation is underway.
